Paying for fuel with cash in France

What would you do if you had to refuel outside of office hours and your card would not work for whatever reason? Turns out there is a way to pay for fuel with cash without having to talk to a person.

  1. Search for "Intermarché station-service" and get to the nearest Intermarché station. Google maps link.
  2. Park your car next to a dispenser and walk to the little cabin where you would normally pay cash. You should see a ticket vending machine that says "Paiement carburant en espèces / Pay by cash to fill your car" with instructions in French and English.
  3. Insert a €5, €10, €20, or €50 banknote into it and wait for it to print a ticket for the banknote. Insert as many banknotes as you need tickets for, and do not forget to wait for a ticket to be printed before inserting another banknote.
  4. Go back to your car at the dispenser, change the language to English, and wave the barcode of the ticket you just printed over the scanner.
  5. Select the type of fuel you need.
  6. Enter the code from the ticket.
  7. Refuel your car as usual.

Backstory

I happened to be stuck in Riez with no way to refuel my car on a Sunday evening and I had a 2.5 hour drive the next morning to Nice. Luckily, my Airbnb host at Riez suggested I try this out and I am glad it worked!

Staying at Riez, right within a Roman-era fort, was a great experience in and of itself, with the lavender fields 10 minutes away and other sites like the Verdon Gorge (Gorges du Verdon), etc. within reach. I highly recommend my host, Sabrina!
